Michael Kamber on Military Censorship

BagNewsSalon is pleased to offer this exclusive audio slideshow interview featuring Michael Kamber, and a focused look at the issue of military censorship, including the photos he’s insisted on being seen.

Michael has been “working around the edges” of the Iraq War since 2003 as a photojournalist for The New York Times. Many of the events that took place during the war were not accessible to him. Some incidents that he was able to witness and photograph were never published. “The reality of the war versus the war that people saw in the newspapers and magazines, it’s a very different reality,” said Kamber.

Making pictures and getting them published have their own set of rules dictated by government, military, publishers and editors. The images made by the photojournalists who covered the war can reveal a gruesome reality beyond what the American media has shown us. “I think that we need to publish those photos for history even if we can’t get them in the newspaper today,” said Kamber.

During embeds with the United States military, Kamber was limited in regards to what he was allowed to photograph. One day during his time embedded, Kamber’s unit was attacked by an IED. After a quick recovery from the debris, Kamber began to photograph but the unit captain yelled out to him “no pictures!” Kamber replied “I’m here to do my job and you can take my cameras later.” The U. S. military later warned The New York Times not to publish the photos and also threatened to revoke the paper’s embed access. Mr. Kamber and his editors dug through the images from that day and tried to conform to the military’s requirements. The graphic images were left unpublished.

Now Kamber is working on an oral history project about access and censorship during the conflict. “I don’t feel that an accurate visual record of the war has really been set forth,” he said. Kamber has interviewed many photojournalists who reported from the Iraq war and they all have stories that shed light on the intricate details that went into defining what the general public was able to see from the conflict. Kamber plans to publish the transcribed interviews with the images that have been kept from our eyes.

"Football: The Most Dangerous Game..."

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano (left) and Army head coach Rich Ellerson (right) watch as medical personnel treat Rutgers player Eric LeGrand after he was injured tackling Army runner Malcolm Brown in the fourth quarter of their game at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on Saturday, October 16, 2010. LeGrand suffered a spinal cord injury in the Scarlet Knights' 23-20 overtime victory against Army and has no movement below his neck, the school announced Sunday. CHET GORDON/Times Herald-Record

I worked the ARMY - Rutgers game at the New Meadowlands Stadium this past weekend over in NJ. Spent a lot of years at the Sports Complex throughout my career covering everything from horse shows, college and pro football in the "old" Giants Stadium, to college basketball and of course the NJ Nets and NJ Devils in their respective arenas. Nothing prepared me for the massive hit that Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand leveled on Army runner Malcolm Brown on a kickoff return late in the game. The collision took place literally 10 yards from me, and I can still hear the crack when LeGrand went airborne and struck Brown head on. I didn't shoot the play as I was blocked by
other players and sideline officials, but knew immediately that someone would most likely have been seriously injured after such a crushing hit. There was a deafening silence in the ballpark and you could almost hear every camera firing from both sidelines in those ensuing moments. I only made a few frames when the medical personnel were treating LeGrand, as well as when they carted him off the field. As of today, he remains paralyzed from the neck down after surgery to relieve pressure on his spinal cord, at Hackensack, NJ Medical Center.

You can watch a video of the play by clicking: HERE.

"Wow! Just Wow...!"

This from The Big Picture and images from the rescue of the 33 miners rescued from an underground gold & copper mine earlier this week.

"Over two months have passed since the August 5th collapse of the San Jose mine near Copiapo, Chile, when 33 miners were trapped 700 meters (2,300 ft) below ground. The men were kept alive over that time by supplies delivered through narrow holes drilled down to them, and kept hope through video conferences with family - until last night, when the first of the 33 miners was successfully lifted to the surface in a specially-designed rescue capsule. Friends and relatives, many of whom had camped nearby for months, slowly let their cautious optimism become joy as they were reunited with their loved ones. As of this writing, at 9:30 pm, Eastern time, all of the 33 men have now made it safely to the surface.

*I didn't feel the need to add the caption info for each photograph, as these images are strong enough to stand on their own. You can view the 49 photos on the site by clicking HERE. ~cg.

*(Another Photographer's) Creativity....

Haven't posted in a while & I apologize. I found this piece on the web a few weeks ago while researching other forms of stop-motion animation with a still camera. It's a year or so old, but man is it something to watch...
Make sure you view the second video on how this piece was produced. 2,000+ images were shot to make the piece. Talk about creativity, planning, attention to detail, and spot-on execution by a team of artists. ~cg.
